Boost Member Engagement

How do clubs get more members? The answer may begin with the members they already have. In this Program Quality Director’s Corner, discover how small, intentional actions—connecting with members, recognizing achievements, creating participation opportunities, and building a guest-friendly club culture—can lead to stronger engagement and natural membership growth. If your club is looking for practical ways to energize members and attract guests, this article offers a simple monthly approach to help turn engagement into momentum.

One of the most common questions I hear from club leaders is, "How do we get more members?" While marketing, social media, and guest events all play an important role; the answer often starts much closer to home: engagement.

The truth is that member growth and member engagement are inseparable. Clubs that actively engage their current members naturally attract guests, retain members longer, and create an environment people want to join. Before asking how to recruit more members, we should first ask: Are we creating an experience that people cannot wait to share with others?

When members are enthusiastic about their club, they become our best ambassadors. They invite colleagues, friends, and family not because they have been asked to, but because they genuinely believe others would benefit from the experience.

Engagement Drives Growth

Consider the journey of a guest visiting your club. They may be impressed by a great speech, but what often convinces them to join is something even more powerful: the energy in the room.

Guests notice when members are engaged. They see members taking on leadership roles, supporting one another through evaluations, celebrating achievements, and participating enthusiastically in every aspect of the meeting. A vibrant club culture communicates that Toastmasters is more than a meeting. It is a community.

Small Actions That Make a Big Difference

If your club wants to grow, start by focusing on these engagement strategies:

Create Opportunities for Participation: Every member should have a role to play. Members who participate regularly feel invested in the club's success and are more likely to remain active and invite guests.

Celebrate Success Frequently: Recognize educational achievements, leadership accomplishments, personal milestones, and first-time roles. Recognition builds confidence and creates positive momentum.

Offer Creative and Relevant Meetings: Theme meetings, speech contests, expert panels, storytelling nights, and workshop-style sessions keep meetings fresh and increase attendance.

Build Relationships Beyond the Agenda: Strong clubs are built on strong relationships. Mentoring, social gatherings, coffee chats, and simple check-in conversations help members feel connected and valued.

Ask for Feedback and Act on It: Members who feel heard are more likely to stay engaged. Simple surveys and informal conversations can help identify opportunities for improvement.

A Simple Engagement Plan

To increase both engagement and membership growth, every club can adopt a simple monthly approach:

Week 1: Connect - Reach out to every member. Learn about their goals and identify how the club can support their journey.

Week 2: Engage - Ensure every member has an upcoming meeting role and an opportunity to participate.

Week 3: Recognize - Celebrate achievements publicly during meetings and through club communications.

Week 4: Grow - Host a guest-friendly meeting and encourage every member to invite at least one guest.

This approach creates a cycle where engaged members become enthusiastic advocates, generating a steady stream of guests and potential new members.

The Membership Formula

Many clubs search for a recruiting strategy when what they really need is an engagement strategy. Growth is not something we pursue separately from program quality. Growth is often the natural outcome of delivering exceptional member experiences.

As we move through September, I challenge every club to focus on the members already sitting in your meetings. Connect with them. Recognize them. Support their growth. When members feel valued, they stay. When they stay, they thrive. And when they thrive, they bring others along on the journey.

The question is not simply, "How do we get more members?"

The better question may be, "How do we create a club experience that people cannot help but share?"

Remember, Small actions. Big results. Stronger clubs.
